Expertise and interest
Marit Haldar is Professor of Sociology at Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) and a scholar of cultural sociology. She has also led projects on science and technology studies (STS) for at-least a decade. Her research examines the social consequences of digitalisation, with particular attention to telepresence, social inequality and loneliness, and extends a long-standing engagement with questions of childhood, ageing, gender and family life. She directs the Centre for Digitalisation of Public Services and Citizenship (CEDIC) and DIGIT, the Norwegian Research School for Digitalisation, Culture and Society.
Her current projects include SAFE@HOME, on technologies of care for ageing migrants, and BRO, on the sustainable division of tasks in health and care services. She is also a partner and work package leader on Homesick, which develops hospital-at-home services for populations with migration backgrounds, and on the national evaluation of the Stay Safe at Home reform.
This work builds on more than a decade of research leadership at the intersection of technology and welfare. Virtual Presence, an international collaboration with the universities of Oxford, Leicester and Oslo, studied telepresence technologies as a response to loneliness, while Welfare Access Through Technology (WATT) developed and tested welfare innovations together with partners in the private and voluntary sectors.
Previously, Professor Haldar has served as President of the Norwegian Sociological Association, Chairman of the Norwegian Sociological Journal, and as a committee member for the Hans L. Zetterberg Prize in Sociology in Sweden and expert Panel Member, Research Council of Norway (RCN).
